Jeffrey
CONSERVE® PLUS Total Resurfacing Hip System Recipient

When Jeffrey, 47, was fifteen years old he became the youngest paddle tennis player to win a national championship. Since then, he has garnered nineteen additional first place trophies and also won the national championship in platform tennis in the twenty-three and under age division.

However, his hard work ethic on the court put a strain on his hips. Jeffrey had developed osteoarthritis at an unusually young age and suffered from severe pain in both hips for many years. Barely able to walk, his constant pain was beginning to affect his job as a lawyer. He knew surgery was a possibility, so at the recommendation of a friend, he contacted the Joint Replacement Institute of Los Angeles.

Dr. Harlan Armstuz, who has done over 1,000 joint replacement surgeries, encouraged Jeffrey to participate in Wright’s CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing clinical trial. During hip resurfacing, very little bone is removed to insert the artificial metal femoral head over the top of the femur, allowing patients to retain as much healthy bone as possible.

Jeffrey underwent the surgery on February 27, 2004. “The whole process was a very positive experience. I feel that I made a great choice.” Just four months after his surgery, he received his scuba diving license. That was just the beginning. A couple months later, he started playing paddle tennis again and soon earned the nickname “bionic cinderella man” by friends.

Now, Jeffrey is confident in playing competitively again, doing yoga and working out regularly. A major milestone for Jeffrey was his 4th place trophy in a national beach paddle tennis tournament. “It was extremely satisfying,” Jeffrey remembers. “I wanted to rub it in to everyone that I had surgery on both hips and was still able to dominate!”
